Best known in the world of mixed martial arts for holding
one of the longest undefeated streaks in MMA history, Sean Sherk had the
distinction of being the first UFC Lightweight Champion after the lightweight
was re-introduced by the UFC.
The former UFC lightweight champion has only four career
losses and is regarded by many in the UFC and MMA communities as one of the
best lightweight fighters of his era. Sherk
also won the title in a Fight of the Night award winning performance against
Kenny Florian at UFC 69: Shootout. He also spent time competing in PRIDE
Fighting Championships and Pancrase, the Japan-based organizations, where he
was undefeated.
During his fight against Hermes Franca at UFC 73 on July 7,
2007, Sherk tested positive for Nandrolone metabolite and was given a one year
suspension by the California State Athletic Commission and fined $2,500. Franca
also received the same suspension and fine. Franca admitted to using Drostanolone
while Sherk denied allegations. He claimed the positive drugs test was a result
of errors in lab procedures.
Sherk also claimed that he passed three lie detector tests
and said the suspension had cost him around$500,000 in prize money, sponsorship
and advertising, in addition to $20,000 in legal fees. Sherk went on to say
that the California State Athletic Commission conducted itself very
unprofessionally. The California State Athletic Commission and Quest
Diagnostics denied any mistakes but Sherk's ban was reduced to six months.
In 2005, Sherk was invited back to the UFC for a fight with
Georges St. Pierre where Sherk lost by TKO. In his next fight after the
Nandrolone doping ban, Sherk defeated Nick Diaz via unanimous decision at UFC
59.
